Register Today

Western Carolina University’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice program is designed for registered nurses seeking the highest level of clinical preparation in advanced psychiatric care. Offered in a fully online format with individualized, faculty-supported clinical placement guidance, the program prepares graduates to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions across the lifespan. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based practice, rural and underserved population care, and the development of leadership skills that influence healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes. This program is tailored for working professionals who want to advance their scope of practice while maintaining flexibility in their schedules.

What You'll Learn

In Western Carolina University’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) DNP program, students build advanced clinical and theoretical foundations needed to provide comprehensive mental health care across the lifespan. Coursework emphasizes psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy modalities, and evidence-based management of acute and chronic mental health conditions. The program also integrates training in leadership, quality improvement, health policy, and culturally competent care. Through supervised clinical experiences in a variety of inpatient, outpatient, community, and rural mental health settings, students gain hands-on experience applying advanced therapeutic and diagnostic skills. Students also complete a DNP scholarly project that addresses a real-world mental health practice challenge and demonstrates doctoral-level competency.

Where You'll Go

Graduates of the PMHNP DNP program are prepared to sit for national certification as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Certified PMHNPs are in high demand nationwide and can work in hospitals, outpatient behavioral health clinics, community mental health centers, primary care practices, integrated care settings, correctional health, telepsychiatry, and private practice. The program’s emphasis on rural and underserved populations positions graduates to expand access to mental health services in areas where providers are critically needed. With strong clinical preparation, advanced leadership training, and a doctoral-level skill set, graduates are equipped not only for clinical practice but also for roles in administration, education, clinical leadership, and systems-level improvement within mental health care.
